چکیده

Abstract. We study the steady state phase behavior of homogeneous, rigid, extended (polar) nematic polymers or nematic dispersions under imposed magnetic (or electric fields), in which the intermolecular dipole-dipole and excluded volume interaction as well as external field contribution are accounted for. We completely characterize the phase diagram for polar nematics with and without permanent magnetic moments (or dipoles). For nematics without magnetic moments, the steady state is either purely nematic or polar depending on the strength of the excluded volume and the dipole-dipole interaction, in which the nonzero polarity vector (the first moment vector) is coaxial with the second moment tensor; thereby the steady state pdf is determined essentially by up to three scalar order parameters and a rotational group of SO(2) transverse to the imposed field direction. For nematics with permanent magnetic moments (or dipoles), the steady states are polar and the polarity vector is parallel to the external field direction when a necessary condition for parameters is met. When the condition is violated, only stable steady states have their polarity vector parallel to the external field direction and there are thermodynamically unstable nonparallel states. The stability of the steady states is inferred from the minimum of the free energy density.

Steady State Solutions of the Smoluchowski Equation for Rigid Nematic Polymers under Imposed Fields∗

We solve the Smoluchowski equation for steady state solutions of rigid nematic polymers and suspensions under imposed elongational flow, magnetic or electric fields, respectively. Under the three imposed fields, we show that (1) the Smoluchowski equation can be cast into a generic form, (2) the external field must parallel to one of the eigenvectors of the second moment tensor in steady states,...

Monodomain dynamics for rigid rod and platelet suspensions in strongly coupled coplanar linear flow and magnetic fields

xtensional flows and magnetic fields induce similar steady alignment responses when applied to iquid crystals LCs , liquid crystal polymers LCPs and nematic rigid rod or platelet uspensions. This observation is explained for LCs by a classical analogy, expressed as a ymmetry, between hydrodynamic and magnetic fields in the Leslie-Ericksen theory de Gennes nd Prost, The Physics of Liquid Crystal...

On the Equilibria of the Extended Nematic Polymers under Elongational Flow

We classify the equilibrium solutions of the Smoluchowski equation for dipolar (extended) rigid nematic polymers under imposed elongational flow. The Smoluchowski equation couples theMaier-Saupe short-range interaction, dipole-dipole interaction, and an external elongational flow. We show that all stable equilibria of rigid, dipolar rod dispersions under imposed uniaxial elongational flow field...

Study of phase transition in homogeneous, rigid extended nematics and magnetic suspensions using an order-reduction method

We study the phase transition in rigid extended nematics and magnetic suspensions by solving the Smoluchowski equation for magnetically polarized rigid nematic polymers and suspensions in equilibrium, in which the molecular interaction is modeled by a dipolar and excluded volume potential. The equilibrium solution or the probability distribution of the molecular distribution is given by a Boltz...
